What are the benefits of exhaust modifications?

Exhaust mods increase horsepower by increasing airflow to the engine. Most factory exhaust systems limit the airflow meaning the vehicle is unable to expel the used gasses as quickly, thereby reducing the performance. Aftermarket exhaust systems can be used to relieve this pressure allowing for increased power.

The most common parts of the exhaust that are modified are the header, manifold, mid-section, muffler, and tailpipe. These parts can either be purchased individually or as part of an exhaust system, the most common being cat-back (e.g. Magnaflow 16729) and axle-back (e.g. Magnaflow

What is the difference between a cat-back and axle-back exhaust system?

A cat-back exhaust system modifies the exhaust behind the catalytic converter. These typically include new mid-section, mufflers and
tailpipes. Axle-back systems only change the mufflers and tailpipes, so do not offer as much of a performance increase, but are cheaper. With an axle-back system, you then have the option of swapping the mid-section in the future if
you are looking for an extra performance boost.

What are the different types of exhaust mid-section?

There are three main types of mid-section: Y-pipe, X-pipe, and H-pipe. Most cars come with Y-pipes which only support a single exhaust, whereas X-pipes and H-pipes support dual-exhaust systems. X-pipes sound louder and raspier. In terms of performance, X-pipes (e.g. Roush X-Pipe for Mustang) typically offer better power whereas H pipes (e.g. Roush H-Pipe for Mustang) offer better torque.

What is the difference between a header and manifold?

Exhaust manifolds are made from a single-piece, whereas headers give each cylinder its own pipe. Manifolds are cheaper and require less maintenance, whereas headers offer increased performance by decreasing the exhaust back pressure.

How do I improve the sound of my car’s exhaust?

There are several ways to do this. One of the cheapest is to change the muffler. However, if you have a larger budget then consider a cat-back system and also think about changing the exhaust header if your vehicle is currently just rocking a stock manifold.
