What is an oil cooler?

To help with improving heat management of the engine and aid in lowering emissions, most modern cars are now fitted with a water to oil cooler matrix / heat exchanger to warm up and cool the engine oil. This is done by passing engine coolant fluid through multiple aluminium plated core channels, with oil channels sandwiched in between. This regulates the engine oil temperature and is managed by the engines water coolant thermostat.

The problem with the factory oil cooler

Since the release of the RHD Mustang back in 2015, some owners have experienced their factory oil to water cooler matrix failing internally which causes the engine oil to mix with the coolant. This mix of fluids ends up in both the engine and coolant system and can lead to catastrophic engine failure. If caught early enough, the mixed engine oil and coolant can be flushed out, but this is a multi-step flush process and it can be difficult to fully remove all oil residue present in the water coolant system. The factory oil cooler has also been known to fail externally, with engine oil leaking on to the floor. If either of these faults are not noticed immediately, this can cause serious irreversible damage to the engine.

The solution

To eliminate the issue, the factory water to oil cooler is removed and instead replaced with an air to oil cooler, much like a conventional car radiator. For the left hand drive models, there were already aftermarket air to oil kits available, most of which were adapted for right hand drive cars. This was achieved with an oil filter sandwich plate and block off plate, in the location of the factory water cooler on right hand drive models. We did not feel this was the best solution, so we developed our own Oil Cooler Upgrade Kit for the right hand drive S550 5.0L GT Mustang. Working together with Mustang specialist Modurstang in Chipping Norton, we produced a superior alternative to the other aftermarket oil cooler options available on the market, specifically for the RHD S550 GT models.

What makes our Nemesis UK Oil Cooler Kit different?

Other aftermarket options utilise a blanking plate and a conventional thermostatic sandwich plate in between the engine and oil filter. Access to the oil filter is already limited from the factory and this sandwich plate would often cause problems. We previously experienced multiple reports of these sandwich plate style kits, where oil would begin to weep from the sandwich plate. This was generally caused by the double ended threaded bolt slowly working loose, due to vibrations from normal driving of the vehicle. With these reports becoming more frequent, we started afresh developing & designing our own oil cooler kit. In our Nemesis UK Oil Cooler Kit, the thermostatic sandwich plate was eliminated and in place a CNC machined thermostatic take off plate was designed and manufactured.

For road cars, having a thermostatic valve in an oil cooler system is crucial. This valve enables the cars oil to heat to the correct operating temperature, before being directed to pass through the oil cooling system at a greater flow rate. Therefore, the Nemesis UK Oil Cooler Kit equipped with the thermostatic valve will not be cooling the oil from cold. The rest of the kit uses high quality Aeroquip stainless steel braided hose, as well as Setrab high quality AN fittings & a large 19 row oil cooler matrix.

The importance of an oil cooler

Being a 5.0L V8, this engine can quickly get very hot when pushing the performance of the Mustang with more spirited driving, especially if supercharged or out on track. Having this additional cooling over the main radiator helps to maintain oil supply at a consistent optimal temperature for your engine. This will improve the engines performance and increase longevity as well as maintain oil viscosity.

There is no DIY installation guide for our kit as the oil cooler components can be installed in a variety of locations depending on installer preference, the specification of the cars transmission or if equipped with any form of forced induction.
